Our Take

April Wilson

There's exactly one reason this card matters more to a points person than to a normal person. Citi is the only issuer in the country with an American Airlines transfer partnership, and only its premium cards get the full 1:1 ratio. If you want a flexible bank currency that reaches AAdvantage, your options are this card and the Citi Strata Premier® Card. That's the whole list. It isn't a nice-to-have feature; it's the entire pitch.

That privilege comes with a price though, and the $595 annual fee on this card is nothing to sneeze at. It does come with a lot of credits though, and almost every credit on this card runs on the calendar year, not your cardmember year. So if you open this card late in the year, you can use a full set of credits within weeks, then get another full set in January. First year value = epic. Second year value = time to do some math. Be honest with yourself about whether you'll use these credits or whether they're the equivalent of a gym membership you keep meaning to use. The hotel credit and the lounge access are the two most people will actually cash in.

Also, it's worth mentioning that the earning rates are real but portal-dependent. The 12x and 6x rates require booking through Citi Travel®, and portal bookings can cost more than booking direct and get messier when plans change. Everything outside the portal earns 1.5x, which is soft for a card at this price.

TLDR; worth it if you fly American, will use the hotel credit and the lounges, and will continue getting real value in year two and beyond.

How to make the most of your Citi Strata Elite℠ Card

[.dontreco] We don't recommend: Shopping with points or cashing out [.dontreco]You can spend points at participating merchants like Amazon, PayPal, and CVS, or redeem them for gift cards and cash at thankyou.com. Cash redemptions generally land around a penny per point, and shop-with-points and gift card rates can come in lower still. It's a useful floor to know exists, but it's the worst thing you can do with points earned on a $595 card. If cash back is your goal, you want a different card entirely.

[.sometimesreco] We sometimes recommend: Booking through Citi Travel® [.sometimesreco]Citi's portal doesn't boost your points the way some competitors do; you're generally still getting around a penny each. What the portal buys you is the 12x and 6x earning rates and access to The Reserve properties. So it earns your points well without stretching them. Compare the portal price against booking direct before you commit, and remember portal bookings can be harder to change and may not earn hotel elite credit.

[.sometimesreco] We sometimes recommend: Hotel transfer partners [.sometimesreco]Citi's hotel partners include Choice Hotels and The Leading Hotels of the World®. These rarely beat a penny per point once you run the math, and Citi has adjusted hotel transfer ratios recently. There are specific properties where it works out. Check the cash rate first, every time.

[.alwaysreco] We always recommend: Airline transfer partners, starting with American [.alwaysreco]This is the whole reason to hold this card. Citi is the only issuer with an American Airlines AAdvantage® transfer partnership, and the Strata Elite gets the full 1:1 ratio. AAdvantage is strongest on partner premium cabins, which is where points stop being worth a penny and start being worth several. Citi's other airline partners include JetBlue, Virgin Atlantic, Cathay, and EVA Air, so American is the headline but not the only good answer.

Transfer Partners

While Citi's standout partner is undoubtedly American Airlines, ThankYou points also transfer to a number of other excellent travel partners:

Best Complementary Cards

Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card

By combining the Strata Elite with the Sapphire Preferred, you'll get access to both suites of travel partners. Use Citi's ThankYou points for partners like American Airlines and Accor, and Chase's Ultimate Rewards for partners like Air Canada, United, Marriott, and Hyatt (note that the transfer ratio is now 4:3 for Chase Sapphire Preferred cardholders).

Citi Double Cash® Card

Why? The Strata Elite pairs really well with the Citi Double Cash Card, creating a solid rewards strategy that enhances both everyday spending and travel benefits. The Double Cash Card offers a straightforward 2% cash back on all purchases — 1% when you buy and 1% when you pay. This cashback can be converted into Citi ThankYou points, which can then be transferred to the Strata Elite. By doing so, cardholders can take advantage of the Strata Premier's higher redemption value on travel-related expenses, including flights and hotel stays. This pairing allows you to maximize rewards on routine purchases while also making your points work harder when it’s time to travel.

Who Should Get The Citi Strata Elite℠ Card?

  • You fly American Airlines and want a flexible currency that reaches AAdvantage at full value
  • You'll actually use the hotel benefit and the lounge access
  • You book travel through portals anyway, or are willing to
  • You can open the account late in the calendar year and capture two rounds of credits
  • You bank with Citi at a tier that earns the relationship credit

Who Should Not Get The Citi Strata Elite℠ Card?

  • You book travel direct and won't use Citi Travel®
  • The credits don't match how you spend, leaving you paying $595 for lounge access
  • You want a high base earning rate on all travel, since 1.5x outside the portal is low
  • You're adding multiple authorized users at $75 each
  • You don't fly American, which removes the card's main structural advantage
  • You're newer to points and haven't yet earned back a fee this size
